Follow Bertha's breakthrough

The contractor Seattle Tunnel Partners began mining around 8 a.m. this morning. The tunneling machine Bertha will mine through the five-foot-thick concrete wall of the disassembly pit, an effort that is expected to take several hours.

Crews will then stop to remove the braces supporting the wall (visible in the livestream feed), work that will take several days. After the braces are removed, crews will advance the mining machine until it is in its final resting place inside the disassembly pit.

Below is footage of Bertha's breakthrough, captured by a drone flying above the disassembly pit.

How far has the TBM moved since 8 AM? Is it mining the concrete wall yet?

How typical... Yes, it drilled through the concrete wall and just as the breakthrough is happening the live feed dies... GRRR!

Andy Day, mining began around 8 am. They need to mine through the 5 foot concrete wall of the disassembly pit. You can follow along via the cameras and Twitter, @berthadigssr99.

Yes like watching paint dry in the fog.

Live cam not working. It is trying to pass an insecure http: connection through a secure https: site. All we see is a black video.

As a video production they should have considered the dust and done something to handle it !

Almost every feed is tapped out and not working. Awesome. Not. They didn't plan their servers well enough for this. Boo.

Getting the feed on Safari, not on Firefox or Chrome. Also getting it on my iPad via Chrome.

this is cool!

What a disappointment !
Can't see anything through the dust !

Matt said...

safari works. chrome does not

They should use spray water to reduce air polution.

Allen Dreke said...

Why get a lot of water for stop dusty

Alan Robertson said...

If you see what looks like a blue fog, then the feed is working. They activated sprayers to keep the dust down and as MarkL said, it's like watching paint dry through the fog.

Marc McMillin said...

Well this sure is an example of poor planning. Not gauging the interest in watching this feed and not taking into account the dust and having a mist curtain to take care of it.

What is the link to the drone footage?

The Seattle Times feed is showing fine on Chrome. So glad I get to watch this...

Some said it couldn't be done.
Many said it shouldn't be done.
Now it is done.

Helluva job, helluva job!!! Progress, late or as scheduled, is a good thing!!! Now if it the project can be completed without loss of life.... we be ok.

And all stop! Congrats to all the folks working on Bertha and onward to a new waterfront 🎉

MarkL said...

Good Job Bertha !:) and STP and all of the workers, you go!! The live feed is back up men in a basket. Probably getting ready to pump muck. Man in basket is spraying something in the muck with a pump sprayer. ???
Thanks Maud

This project was unwanted useless expensive and antidemocratic.

Rusty Oliver said...

Pointless expensive and anti democratic. Just another tranfer from public to private enterprise.

I love Bertha!!!

Will be a couple of weeks to remove the large steel braces and clear the rubble.

MarkL said...

Bertha is not quite done yet. Still has to bore into the pit and build nine more rings.
